Cinderella & The Playboy (Matched In Montana)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (01 July, 2002)
Author: Laura Wright
Average review score:

Great new Desire author!
Wow -- a great book from a great new Desire author. I picked this up not knowing what to expect, but Desire has found a fantastic author to add to their stable. The story is sweet and emotional and funny ... I'd love to be a Cinderella surrounded by chocolate, too!

I gobbled this story up...it was amusing, entertaining, funny... and most of all, ROMANTIC!

Today's Cinderella is better than ever
Wonderful...be ready to laugh, to have your heartstrings tugged, and have a fan ready to cool off the heat! The chemistry between down-to-earth Abby and incredibly sexy CK Tanner is real (and tender) and exactly what a romance should be! This new and fantastic writer will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish and leave you satisfied that 'happily ever after' can happen in today's day and age. Cinderella lives on!

This is a good read!
All the characters are three dimensional and well developed (not just the heroine, the hero is wonderful, too.) I got that "lump in the throat" feeling when I came to the last page, which tells me that Ms. Wright really knows how to tell a story. I recommend this book.

Crossing Divides: A Couple's Story of Cancer, Hope, and Hiking Montana's Continental Divide
Published in Hardcover by American Cancer Society (April, 2002)
Author: Scott Bischke
Average review score:

Bischke's best!
Meeting a grizzly on the trail is terrifying. So is battling cancer. Scott Bischke's creative mind connected these two fears and the result is the cleverly interwoven story Crossing Divides. This true-life tale recounts the trials and triumphs of Kate's (Scott's wife) battle and eventual victory over cancer. Their celebration takes them home to the Continental Divide for an adventurous traverse across their home state of Montana. The challenges of each journey show us the power of attitude in all endeavors. Crossing Divides is a riveting read that does not gloss over the tough parts of life - it infuses them with the hope and strength to persevere.

Healing With Love
Crossing Divides is a beautiful love story of a young couple's successful struggle through the wilderness of cancer.

Kate and Scott were a young, athletic, married couple in the prime of their lives when Kate received the diagnosis of cervical cancer. It immediately became "their" cancer.

Their love of wilderness and their desire to return to nature became the focal point of their healing process. Kate and Scott take us along on their post-treatment hike though the beauty of Montana's section of the Continental Divide while relating the story of their cancer ordeal.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants an insight into cancer and everything that relates to it. I especially liked the story because they won.

An Inspiration
This book gives hope to anyone who has had to deal with cancer. Katie and Scott fought a tremendous battle against "their recurrent cancer" and came out as the victors by always staying in control of their choices in treatment and caregivers. They researched all their options completly and came up with a plan that would work best for them in beating the odds. I say "their cancer", because Scott was there through each and every step, supporting Katie, so she was never alone. This is a love story between a couple who have great strength and determination, as shown by the parallels of their battle with cancer and the journey they took on the Continental Divide trail of Montana soon after Katie's treatments. It is also a great book for any outdoor enthusiast who loves nature and a happy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Doc : Then and Now with a Montana Physician
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (September, 2003)
Author: R. E. Losee M. D.
Average review score:

Neat doctor; good book
This was an excellent book and would like to have this man as my doctor. He gave an excellent picture of what doctoring was like in a small town, what his philosophy of being a doctor is and his criticism of non doctors making doctor decisions. He is critical of law suits and the problems of liability insurance costs that he could not afford. He is down to earth and not afraid to say that mistakes can and are made. Some medical terms might slow someone not familiar with them.

A Glimpse Into The Life Of A Doctor
This is a wonderful heart filled story of what it was like being a doctor when you had very little supplies, but a whole lot of heart!! It is a book that will hold a place on honor in my library, not only because I have met the author, but mainly because it is a part of our country's heritage. Dr. Losee's stories are told so that you can picture them in your mind and see what it was like to be in that era. Some make you laugh, others make you cry. I compare his writing to that of James Harriot; both writers make you feel like you are there with them.

Wonderful memoir of what medicine used to be about.
Doc Losee writes in a wonderfully refreshing style that brings the reader into an inevitable friendship with him. Medicine may never be like this again, but Doc has left a record of what is once was. The day I finished this book I wrote a letter to Doc Losee, and imagine my surprise when less than a week later, I received a personal note back from him. I have it on my wall in my study to remind me of this beautiful little book written by the Yale-educated country doctor

Forty Years' Gatherin's
Published in Hardcover by Lowell Press (December, 1977)
Author: Spike Van Cleve
Average review score:

In one book or less.......
This book describes the people, the attitude, and the lifestyle of Montana - from 1870 until today. The Crazy Mountains continue to evoke the same vast, colorful emotions from those of us who have had the priviledge to grow up beneath them. A must read for anybody who has lived in Montana - and a "should read" for anybody else. A colorful, vivid reminder of home - one of my favorites.

Outstanding
I lived in Montana for two years and a friend suggested I read this book. I bought a copy and could not put it down. After I finished it two days later, I bought his other book "A Day Late And A Dollar Short". Ten years later, I am still reading them. Spike doesn't just tell you a story, you live it. If you have any interest at all in ranch life, horses, family, humor, or Montana history; these should be on your list. You'll learn what "slaunchwise" humor and "going to the mountains" is all about.

It's unfortunate that he only wrote two books.

As your friend and fellow author put it, I too, "hope God gives you a horse" Spike.

An excellent story of everyday life in Melville, Montana~
This book is an excellent piece of work. I probably am somewhat biased as like the author, I too spent my formative years in the Big Open of Eastern Montana. I can certainly sympathize and relate to alot of what old Spike says about nature, family and ranch life in general.

Hungry for Home: A Wolf Odyssey
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (January, 1997)
Authors: Asta Bowen and Jane Hart Meyer
Average review score:

wonderful book, wonderful author
This book is amazing. Having 'Asta Bowen, whom I was a student of, read this outloud it was incredable to hear Marta's voice and experience through the person who gave that to her. I hope she will write more books about herself because she has many tales to tell that haven't been told. Great job Ms. Bowen, you're a great inspiration, an excellent teacher and a wonderful writer.

It is a tragic, but a must-read book!
An alpha-female wolf named Marta lived in an almost perfect home in Pleasent Valley with her new litter of pups, but are soon "rescued" and relocated to a place where Grizzlies rule. Marta is then confident to return home-with or without the rest of her pack. She then struggles for her life, trying to find enough game to survive. She then finds a place which has much game, few humans, and just an all around great place to live. She then finds a mate and gives birth to her second litter of pups. Soon she...oh, I can't say or I'll ruin the book. You have to read this book! It's a sad book but a good one, too. This is a must read book.

wonderful and heartbreaking
This book is a must-read for animal lovers. Live inside the mind of a she-wolf and discover their thoughts, fears, and terrors. It will break your heart and take your breath away and you will think about it for YEARS to come.

Iron Riders: Story of the Buffalo Soldier Bicycle Corps
Published in Paperback by Pictorial Histories Publishing Co. Inc. (01 June, 2000)
Author: George Niels Sorensen
Average review score:

Unique book about a unique corps of soldiers
The subtitle, "Story of the 1890s Fort Missoula Buffalo Soldiers Bicycle Corps" is a good general description of the book's contents. I had never heard of Ft. Missoula, much less known that they had a bicycle corps, before stumbling across this book in the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial's bookstore. It's not a long book, but it covers its topic well. Of course I was interested in the horrendous ride from Missoula, Montana to St. Louis, but the account of the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry saving the Rough Riders at San Juan Hill was enlightening. Also (all too) informative was the account of the "discharge without honor" by order of President Theodore Roosevelt of 167 soldiers, many of them formerly of the bicycle corps. The book also includes numerous photos, a number of which are wonderful shots (and very well-printed) of the soldiers in Yellowstone National Park. I highly recommend this book as an entertaining account of a dedicated group of American soldiers who happened to have been of African descent. (Incidently, having read this book I was able to feel incredibly smug with recognition when the Bicycle Corps turned up as an integral part of Peter Heck's "Tom's Lawyer", the most recent installment of his Mark Twain mystery series.)

Excellent Book!
What a great book! It really has something for everybody; military bike history, Black history, the American frontier at the turn of the century and more. Great pictures and illustrations also. Military cycling books are rare and this one fills a much needed niche. You will not be disappointed.

A Great Story About Bicycles and Black History
Whoever heard about this unusual bicycle corps that pedalled around the Rocky Mountains 100 years ago? The fact that African-American army soldiers participated in this fascinating exercise adds to the enjoyment of this story. The author clearly did his research and presents the material in an understandable and fun manner. Check it out!

A Montana Family (Harlequin Superromance, No. 1008)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (September, 1901)
Author: Roxanne Rustand
Average review score:

fast-paced and fun
I loved the characters, the plot, and the lovely setting. Don't miss this memorable romance.

You can't judge a book by its cover
... Ms. Rustand has written a generous, exciting romance with believable characters you can't help caring about. A reader looking for an emotional, satisfying novel with which to while away an autumn evening won't do better than A MONTANA FAMILY, regardless of which state is on the cover.

Tangled relationships -- Very highly recommended
It took sixteen years for Dr Jolie Maxell to move back to Paradise Corners, Montana. Her family's appeal to move closer and the death of a patient caused her to reevaluate her priorities and stimulated the change of location. As she watched her patient Wendell Hill die with no money but a plethora of mourners, Jolie had realized there would be few to mourn her if she passed. Such a realization caused her to seek her family, despite the many years of troubling relationships. What she found was animosity on the part of her hometown, suspicion and rumors abounding. Her brother's in huge trouble and her father's trying to ignore a serious heart condition. She also found the dream she thought would never be hers.

Building contractor Matt Dawson came to Paradise Corners seeking relief from a questionable Chicago neighborhood for his children. Four years ago his wife passed away from cancer. She'd been his love, his inspiration and his dream come true, and her passing left both him and the children bereft. Having had one beautiful relationship, Matt doesn't expect another to come his way, although the children could really use a mother. But when his daughter becomes ill, Matt finds himself relying on Jolie for more than just medical care.

A multi layered plot lends A MONTANTA FAMILY by Roxanne Rustand complexity and charm. The secondary characters, including a sheep guarding llama and puppy afraid of dust bunnies, bring a bit of humor to a tale filled with deep, intense emotion. The secondary human characters neatly tie the novel to the other parts of the miniseries without bogging down the pace of the plot, allowing the novel to read well as a stand alone, or part of more complex work. Further, the hero and heroine are well-balanced, believable characters living with ordinary challenges and extraordinary circumstances. The hero's daughter's diabetes also lends realism, both propelling the plot and creating an interesting secondary plot line. Very highly recommended.

Montana Mirage
Published in Paperback by Mountain Vallley Publishing, LLC (01 October, 1998)
Author: J. T. Flynn
Average review score:

J.T. Flynns Montana Mirage
This is this a gripping story set in the aggressive beauty that is southwest Montana. A great read if you like a 'can't-put-em-down' mystery or if you want to know the difference between a coulee, swale, draw or drainage. Actually. . .that's STILL a mystery to me.

I felt like I was living in rural Montana!
After seeing "A River Runs Through It" and "The Horse Whisperer", I became even more intrigued with Big Sky Country. Montana Mirage (and Mr. Flynn's first book, Montana Pursuit) taught me about Montana, its people, the environment and the issues facing the last untamed part of the Wild West. This mystery includes a little romance, a lot of suspense and great character development. I'm looking forward to more from this author!

I couldn't put it down
Montana Mirage has something for everyone-romance, mystery, action, suspense, and humor but still has an environmental message. Montana seems big, bold and beautiful and one of the few places left that this conflict between men and mountain lions could still occur. The dialogue rings true and the reader gets a real sense of how ranchers relate to one another and to the land. This book is eye opening as to what is really going on in the west--both entertaining and enlightening.

Montana Red (Big Iron Series)
Published in Paperback by Signet (April, 1998)
Author: Ralph W. Cotton
Average review score:

A Very Well Put Together Story Of the Old West.
Ralph, you have done it again. This story is about an Arizona Ranger Sam Burack, that is very quick on the draw, and an excellent shot with his trusty .58 cali rifle, and a list in his pocket of outlaws and one of them is a ruthless killer, Montana Red. But while pursuing Montana Red, the Ranger gets into quit a few different scaps, that only his wits and years of experience can get him out of. I give You a 5 star, Ralph, "Very Nice Work putting this series together",and would recommend any one that likes old west stories to read this well put together book. I have read the second book in this series also(BADLANDS), and cant wait until (HARD JUSTICE) comes out in the spring. Once you start reading you cant put them down.

Cotton does it again
Having read Cotton's Jeston Nash Outlaw series, While Angels Dance, Killers Of Man, and others, I couldn't imagine this new series topping them. On the surface Montana Red is one gutsy shoot-em up western in the tradition of Max Brand and, Louis Lamour. But the best part of the story is the underlying perception of human behavior. What violence does to the lawman and the other people involved is the stuff all great stories are made of. Cotton takes the reader and makes them face what they would do in these kind of situations. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it, and I still find myself goin back to it. Can't wait to see the movie.

Cotton hits another home run!
Ralph Cotton is the next Louis Lamour. Montana Red takes the reader through a roller coaster ride of shootouts and tough western times when bad men were genuinely BAD! The story so captured me that I was afraid to put the book down for fear of something would happen and I'd miss it. It's definitely a page-turner from beginning to end. Can't wait for the next one.

Montana Spring
Published in Paperback by Pronghorn Press (February, 2002)
Author: Richard Magniet
Average review score:

More than a pleasant surprise - An Entertaining Read!
Though I might not have chosen this myself, (not having much interest in the West per say...though I live here!) I read it on the recommendation of a friend and really enjoyed it! I was intrigued by the letters or diary entires at the beginning of each chapter which moved the action along and also gave a glimpse into everyday frontier life such as the details of wagon train travel.

The years covered in the book (1856-1879) were extremely pivitol in the settlement of the West in general, Montana in particular and also in the history of the country itself by way of the Civil War and these very interesting characters are set right in the midst of it all. The story spans all these events and many more: cattle coming to what would eventually become Montana, the displacement of Native tribes as the settlers move in and gold is discovered. And there are interesting historical tid bits as well such as a camel on the streets of Virginia City, flour riots (!) when bad weather overtakes the final shipment of the season, and a total eclipse of the sun, no less. The vigilantes are here, hateful neighbors, murderous gunslingers and plots for revenge along with the day to day challanges of life on the frontier.

While the focus is the Brewer family who come west from Virginia, the main story line centers on Clay, their oldest son. He and his best friend, Manuel Lopez become US Marshal and deputy at a very young age. Their job puts them in contact with the Blackfeet Indians, the band of Chief Heavy Runner, where Clay eventually finds a wife.

I really enjoyed Montana Spring and would recommend this book to anyone who wants an entertaining read, painlessly laced with history and focused on the trials and tribulations of a white family, an Hispanic family, a Blackfeet band...all interesting and sympathetic characters. Hope the author has another book in the works!

Montana Spring is a fascinating family saga ...
I started reading MONTANA SPRING in the morning ... just a few pages, I thought, just a quick peek to see what it was like. Afterall, I had a lot to do that day! Well, I didn't stop reading until 8 that evening when I finally turned the last page. It has been a long time since I've read a book like this -- I literally couldn't put it down. And I cannot praise it too highly! MONTANA SPRING is one of the most enthralling books I have read in a long time. It is reading smooth as good chocolate, and it has eveything ... history, adventure, romance. MONTANA SPRING is told with an immediacy that makes you feel as if you were there ... or wished you were. The author includes diary entries and letters with narriative, and keeps you turning the page to see what is going to happen next.

MONTANA SPRING is a book that will appeal to men as well as women, and it is a book children will enjoy! Infact, MONTANA SPRING would be a good book for American History students to read; it has such a strong feeling for the time and the place. Read this book and I know you will join me in recommending it to all your friends. What a delight!

Montana Spring
Montana Spring is one of the best new books I have read in a long time. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I laid aside a couple of other books I had by quite famous authors in favor of this one. I hope this author comes out with another book soon. It was a great read. Thanks.
